Synonym finder that knows how strong and how formal each word is

A contextual thesaurus for writers and students. Every synonym sits on a paint-chip strip: lighter chips are milder, deeper chips hit harder, and the dots show how formal it sounds.

Replace a word in your sentence

Paste the sentence you are stuck on. The AI reads it and suggests only contextual synonyms: replacements that keep the meaning and grammar.

Why a flat list of synonyms lets you down

Strength drifts

“Upset”, “angry” and “livid” all appear under the same headword, but swapping one for another changes how your reader feels. The chip depth shows the jump before you make it.

Register clashes

“Kick off” and “commence” mean the same thing, yet one would look odd in a lab report and the other stiff in a text message. The formality dots flag it.

Senses get mixed

“Show” can mean display, prove or perform. Synonyms are grouped by sense, so you do not pick “demonstrate” when you meant “exhibit”.

Questions

What makes a contextual thesaurus different from a normal one?

A normal thesaurus gives one flat list, so “vital”, “major” and “big” look interchangeable. SynonymPro rates every synonym for intensity (how strong it is compared with your word) and formality (slang to academic), tags where it fits (academic, business, creative, casual) and gives an example, so you can see which word fits your sentence.

How are the intensity and formality ratings decided?

Each rating compares the synonym with the headword, which sits in the middle (3 of 5). Ratings are editorial judgements based on standard dictionary usage labels and typical usage, not fixed rules, so always read the word in your own sentence.

Can I look up a word that is not in the list?

Yes. Type any word and, if we do not have a curated entry yet, the AI helper suggests replacements that fit your sentence, each with a strength and formality rating. The curated entries load instantly and work offline once the page is open.

Is SynonymPro free? Do I need an account?

It is free and there are no accounts. Recent searches and saved words stay in your own browser (localStorage) and you can clear them at any time.
