Three kinds of opposite
Gradable antonyms sit at two ends of a scale with steps in between: hot, warm, cool, cold. You can say “very hot” or “hotter”.
Complementary antonyms split the world in two with nothing in between: alive or dead, pass or fail. “Very dead” makes no literal sense.
Relational antonyms describe one relationship from two sides: buy and sell, lend and borrow, parent and child.
Questions
What is an antonym?
An antonym is a word with the opposite meaning, like hot and cold. Linguists distinguish gradable antonyms (hot/cold, with warm and cool in between), complementary antonyms (alive/dead, no middle ground) and relational antonyms (buy/sell, teacher/student).
Why does one word have several antonyms?
Because words have several senses. “Light” is the opposite of “heavy” in one sense and “dark” in another, so an antonym list is really several lists, one per meaning.
Can a word be its own antonym?
Yes. These are called contronyms or Janus words: “sanction” can mean approve or penalise, and “dust” can mean remove dust or add it.
